Caregiver Day at the Capitol 2020 – March 10

February 13, 2020

Caregivers and advocates are getting ready to bring the voices of relatives and non-relative caregivers to Sacramento for our annual Caregiver Day at the Capitol! This is California Alliance of Caregivers’ 4th Caregiver Day at the Capitol, and our 3rd co-hosting with the Alliance for Children’s Rights. This event has brought important awareness to issue of children in foster care. Legislative offices have made important changes and investment in child welfare programs and services in order to improve foster care for children and families.

In 2020, we will be focusing on the following issues:

  1. Hidden Foster Care – AB 2124 addresses the Hidden Foster Care system, when abused and neglected children are given probate guardianship instead of accessing the services, supports and due process protection of dependency court.
  2. Child Care Bridge Expansion – Budget request for additional child care vouchers and trauma-informed training for providers.
  3. Education Stability – AB 1944 provides for additional transportation funding and notification of funding to eligible caregivers.

California Surgeon General Dr. Nadine Burke Harris and California Department Social Services Director Kim Johnson will be speaking to foster and kinship families. Participants will meet in groups for lunch and then walk across the street for meetings in legislative offices. The day will conclude with a debrief and celebration reception. Caregivers report the empowerment they feel after advocating in the Capitol and are amazed at the interest that decision-makers have in their children and families.
