Kern County Information & Resources for Children & Families

Kern County Support Group for Caregivers:
Bakersfield College Foster & Kinship Care Education would like to invite all caregivers of Kern County to attend  “Caregiving Together”.  This is a once a month virtual support group meeting for all Resource Parents in Kern County.  This includes foster parents, relative caregivers and NERFM caregivers. This is an English only meeting now but we will be offering a Spanish meeting soon.  This meeting is intended for caregivers to have an opportunity to support one another and to exchange ideas with each other.  We have a different topic each month that is open for discussion.  Each caregiver will receive a one hour training certificate for attending this meeting.

Our fourth meeting will be October 8, 2020 from 6-7:30pm.  We will be discussing Internet Safety with all of our children.  One of our trainers will help us to understand which internet sites are dangerous for children. We will hear stories about incidents that have actually happened.  The trainer will help us to understand how to be an advocate for our children’s safety.

Our fifth meeting will be on November 13, 2020  from 10-11:30am.  We will be discussing cell phones for children in care.  We will learn how to help our children cope with cell phones, how we can limit the use, and how we as caregivers can monitor the cell phones legally..  Cell phones are a hot topic!!

Our sixth meeting will be on December 10, 2020 from 6-7:30pm.  One of our trainers, will be discussing self-harm in children.  Why do children self-harm?  How can we as caregivers help the children to not self-harm?  Be sure to join us for this discussion!!

After each meeting we ask the participants to let us know which topics they would like to discuss in the future.  On the Caregiving Together flyer is the Zoom link that we always use.  Please feel free to join us in our meetings.  Any questions please feel free to call Gayla Gibson @ 661-332-5129.
